Junior Weekend
Competition
Helping junior players take the next step into match play
Junior Weekend Competition gives players the opportunity to apply what they are learning in coaching, gain match experience, and represent Mentone Tennis Club in a supportive team environment.
Competition is an optional pathway for Green Ball and Yellow Ball players who are ready to add match play alongside their weekly coaching.
Weekly coaching helps players continue developing their technique, consistency, serving, movement, scoring, and tactical understanding, while weekend competition gives them the opportunity to apply those skills in real match situations.
While weekend competition is administered through Mentone Tennis Club, Excel Tennis helps guide players from our coaching program into suitable competition grades where appropriate.
Why Competition Matters
Weekend competition is one of the best ways for junior players to stay motivated, build confidence, and develop a stronger connection to tennis.
Playing competition helps players:
- Build confidence in real match situations
- Develop scoring, serving, and match play skills
- Understand tennis rules and routines
- Improve focus and motivation during weekly coaching
- Build friendships in a fun and social team environment
- Stay active and develop healthy habits
- Feel more connected to tennis through regular team participation
Players who enjoy competition often stay more engaged with their tennis.
Who It’s For
Junior Weekend Competition is best suited to Green Ball and Yellow Ball players who are ready to begin or continue match play.
It may suit players who:
- Are currently participating in Excel Tennis coaching
- Can rally, serve, and understand basic scoring
- Are ready to play matches against other players
- Would benefit from regular match experience
- Are interested in representing Mentone Tennis Club
Competition grades are structured to suit players at different stages of development, from Green Ball players building confidence with rallying and serving through to experienced Yellow Ball players competing regularly.
